Drywall can’t get wet.  If it gets wet it can become mushy and fall apart.  To help keep it dry keep water sources away from the walls such as busted pipes, flooding water and more.  If you have a leak in your home the drywall will tell you by the stains that it produces.

Using mesh and patching compound

If you have a small hole there is no need to cut away a large patch of drywall to repair.  Also, if the location of the hold is somewhere that won’t hold a picture or other items then you can use a mesh product and patching compound to fix the wall.  How this works is you apply the mesh product over the hole.  From there you apply the patching compound and tape to the wall.  Smooth it out with a trowel and sand it flat.  When everything is dry make sure there are no lumps and wipe the excess dust away.  Finish by painting the wall again.

Replace a section of wall

To replace a section of wall you want to cut around till you hit a stud.  Then, with the studs exposed measure the size of the hole with a tape.  Cut a piece of spare drywall to that size and fit it into the hole making sure it sits flush.  From there screw it to the studs and finish with tape and compound.  Sand smooth and paint.
